The slow but steady death of the Eccles cake

The Eccles Cake has been falling from favour for years.

Its band of advocates are being seduced away by other (delicious) alternatives.

Generational change is working against Eccles Cakes.

A pubic appetite for novelty , innovation and change sees imported pastries from France, Italy and USA remorselessly eroding our more traditional treats.

Real High Streets are dying.

Who is to say this is wrong? The power of the market is at play here.

Supermarkets offer either mass produced, packaged, travesties or hybrids of Eccles cakes and Mince Pies in puff pastry – a ghastly affront to both.

Small local bakers are being constantly absorbed into local groups with a central preparation site and in-store ovens to finish the product.

The existing genuinely local bakers were already being hammered by the economics and savage competition from Greggs and Local Groups. The Corvid shutdown has been fatal to some. Even if they open there is little demand as we stay at home to please Boris.

Your tasters have grown fat by over indulgence in the (alleged) interests of research.

We feel, sadly, our preferred cake is doomed.

We will still occasionally seek out a special supplier or if we stumble across one we will let you know and the site will remain but regular posts will now cease.

Thank you for your support

Best wishes

Sayers in Urmston

Swimming strongly in a sea of competition one would expect the redoubtable Sayers to prevail.

I love the variation between shops in the same chain with in store bakeries. The personalities of the staff may be experienced. Like artists.

Orston

To Orston, to Inspect a bridge we built 20 years ago! We asked our Client, a discerning and knowledgeable person, if there were local Eccles Cake Bakers? Unable to find any he commissioned these.

The Lime Haus, the village hub to bake some! Such luxury.

As sensuous as the person who baked them.

What a lovely bottom.
